ANGER ON MY MIND

When is anger justified?

Posted on: August 7, 2007

When your rights are violated.

When personal boundaries have been crossed.

When your personal safety or well-being is under threat.

Many of my clients are surprised when I tell them that anger is not bad and is at times justified. The anger management professional is not trained to illuminate anger but to teach management. I illustrate the neutral nature of anger by asking clients if they believe that a butcher knife is bad. They will in fact say that the knife is not bad but how it is used. Anger is a necessary human emotion that is a wonderful tool to protect us from personal violation but just like a knife that can be destructive if misused, our anger must be management–not eliminated.
